It should be widely known that our supermarkets are throwing away a combined average of approximately 300,000 tonnes of food waste each year. 70% of bagged salad, 40% of apples and almost half of all bakery items are routinely thrown away each year.
That’s a lot of food that could make a huge difference elsewhere.
And that’s where The Living Room comes in; a donations based café that collects surplus stock from businesses across Glasgow transforming it into delicious, wholesome meals. These meals are then made available to the public using a Pay What You Decide method, giving those who necessarily wouldn’t have access pay for a healthy, hearty meal.
The belief is that everyone should have the right to good, quality food as well as the power to decide it’s value. To ensure they are as inclusive as possible, the Living Room also offer the option to volunteer as a means of payment.
In addition to this, there is a mini-market within the Living Room which is also Pay What You Decide where anyone is welcome to take a bag of groceries for a price they can manage.
The organisation achieves their goal by saving excess food from retailers, supermarkets, restaurants and cafes and turning this into a range of delicious meals, snacks and drinks; courtesy of the talented food artisans. The meals are mostly vegan and gluten free meaning that everyone can enjoy no matter the dietary requirement.
In other words, food is intercepted before it reaches landfill. They are teaming up with and supporting businesses throughout Glasgow by helping them tackle their food waste while complying with new laws on food waste disposal.
Families and communities across Glasgow will benefit from access to hot and healthy meals which will be free at the point of delivery. As well as this, they will have a space to relax, socialise, better themselves and discover what else is going on within their community.
With the festive season fast approaching, The Living Room is offering a wide range of activities giving everyone to have a wonderful Christmastime.
They will be hosting Glasgow’s very first Pay What You Decide Christmas Market which is open to all. With a wide range of stalls varying from upcycled glassware, unique pieces of art and much more, there is bound to be something for everyone. Visitors can gain some key Christmas skills by learning to make their own Christmas crackers, jumpers and stockings.
For those struggling this Christmas, The Living Room has invited anyone and everyone to join their family on Christmas Day for a special Community Dinner & Dance.
Guests will be served a heart-warming 3 course meal accompanied by some delicious hot drinks; all courtesy of The Living Room at The Space. Following this, guests can enjoy a day filled with open mic, tombola, fancy dress and much more.
The whole family is welcome with a special kid’s space and jam corner for the young ones to enjoy.
So whether you’re looking for some unique Christmas gifts, a place to spend Christmas Day or simply a space to relax and have a hot meal then this the place for you. As their mantra says ‘No-one belongs here more than you’.
The Living Room is currently open 4 days a week from Thursday to Sunday thanks to support from Keep Scotland Beautiful – this will eventually extend to 6 days a week.
