Civil Disobedience brings rock, folk and drag superstars to the Edinburgh Fringe
Live arts production company Civil Disobedience has hit the deck running at the speed of light this Edinburgh Fringe, working across a portfolio of 15 companies and 17 shows.
Based in Scotland’s capital city, Civil Disobedience was set up by Barry and Josef Church-Woods when Barry left the Edinburgh Festival Fringe Society last May, after eight years as their Venues and Companies Manager. Fast-forward to January, and Josef has joined the team full time as producer, along with part time associate producer Louise Oliver.
Their 2017 Fringe season is veritable Smörgåsbord of politically engaged events and world-class work, exploring human condition. Shows include Courtney Act’s The Girl from Oz; Sasquatch, The Opera by Roddy Bottom (of Faith No More Fame); Human Head’s obfuscation; Metta Theatre’s Pixel Dust/Wondr, both starring Simone James (EastEnder); and Joe’s NYC Bar, created by Christian Kelty.
“Joe’s NYC Bar will always hold a special place inner hearts”, says Barry. “It’s the show we set the company up around last year, and it has since taken Edinburgh, Orlando and NYC by storm. We’re incredibly excited to have teamed up with Assembly this year to bring this immersive theatre happening back to Edinburgh, with two daily performances.”
That’s not to say that the other shows in their programme are any less important, Josef explains: “We’re hugely proud of all our artists and their work, and thrilled to be involved with so many fantastic shows. We just took a bunch of people to see Obfuscation, by New York-based Human Head Performance Group, and it was such a great conversation starter. It’s a 35 minute, site-specific, satirical theatre piece, dressed up as a ‘weaponised language seminar’. Brilliant!”
“We have more delicious Americana in our programme,” Josef adds,”in the shape of Sasquatch, The Opera-Roddy Bottum’s dark and twisted love story thats getting everyone very excited; Grammy-nominated artist Michelle Shocked’s Truth vs Reality; and Modern Robot’s Alive: Music for Night of the Living Dead, a masterfully intense live score to Romero’s cult zombie horror. And in keeping with the tradition of excellent New York solo performers, Peter Michael Marino (Show Up), Mindy Raf (Keeping My Kidneys), and Romy Nordlinger (Places) are all presenting superb new work.”
Barry continues: “We also have an amazing portfolio of Australian artists. Carla Lippis’ Cast A Dark Shadow is a really brilliant and unique cabaret experience at The Boards, Edinburgh Playhouse, with the most stunning vocals and live music. We’re bringing the very talented Michael Griffiths back to the Fringe (but for three shows only), and Tomas Ford too- for home we’ve partnered with the awesome team at Gilded Balloon. New to the Edinburgh Fringe are Danny Condon, with comedy cabaret Songs from the Black Sheep; Hans: Mein Camp – a fabulously camp feast of pop hits, live music, hilarious sass, sequins and glitter; and of course RuPaul’s Drag Race superstar Courtney Act, who’s hitting the Edinburgh Fringe for the first time ever.”
