After years of speculation and hope Deadpool is finally getting his very own movie! This February, the maverick mercenary will be in theatres nationwide.
The film is about the mercenary Wade Wilson who, after being subjected to experimentation, develops regeneration and becomes the anti-hero Deadpool. Rude, crude and lewd he will stop at nothing to get revenge. Well, he might for some chimichangas.
Deadpool is one of the most popular Marvel characters, if you have ever been to a comic convention chances are you would have seen at least five Deadpool cosplayers. Fans have been hoping for Deadpool to hit the big screen for years, however his portrayal in X-men Origins left many fans furious.
It was only a matter of time before the merc with the mouth hit the silver screen, considering that his popularity has been growing rapidly over the past few years. He even got his very own video game back in 2013, which only boosted his popularity.

Fox have been going back and forth on whether or not to make this film for 11 years. It was the fan’s reaction to the leaked test footage a few years back that was the final push into making the film. Speaking of which, the test footage was filmed in 2012 in an attempt to get Fox to greenlight the project. After the studio heard fans enthusiastically cry for the film the project was greenlighted within 24 hours.
One of the biggest advocates for this film was none other than Ryan Reynolds himself, the actor who brought Deadpool to life in the X-Men Origins movie. Even he hated how Deadpool was portrayed. After years of pestering Fox, when he saw the suit made for the film he burst into tears.
Discussing what appealed to him about the character, Reynolds said: “In the comic book world, Deadpool is a man of our time with the ability to spout just the right thing, in terms of a pop culture reference, at the worst possible moment, that’s what makes him interesting to me and also makes him sort of limitless.”
Director Tim Miller said: “Deadpool is nothing less than the greatest story ever told – with guns and swords,” he jokes. “It’s also very self-aware; Deadpool knows he’s in a comic book and he even knows he’s in a movie. He breaks the fourth wall and talks to the audience. Sometimes he’s mean to the audience, but they deserve it! I like to think of him as the regenerating degenerate.”
Many fans were nervous that it would receive a PG-13 (12) rating, meaning that it would be rather censored version of Deadpool. However, he has been given an R rating (15) to the delight of fans. This means we get all the blood and profanity that the comics deliver.
If there is an award for best marketing, the Deadpool team needs to win it. With hilarious slogans, clever emoji billboards and short videos encouraging people to check for early signs of cancer, while still in character, it is by far the most impressive marketing I have seen for anything.
These adverts are nothing less of genius. Not only are these PSAs informative but I challenge you to name another movie that did so much to boost awareness for something like cancer. Sure, you get celebrities promoting charities but this takes it to another level.
I can’t wait for this film. I have been replaying the game, catching up in the comics and eating a lot of Mexican food in preparation for it.
